Rep. King will solicit feedback from constituents on issues of vital importance to them and their communities.

“Before beginning another legislative session, it is important that I receive input and ideas from the constituents of District 88 to help me effectively represent and advocate for our community.”  King said.

All local safety guidelines will be observed during these meetings.

This past weekend I was honored to be a part of the annual Spikes and Spurs Invitational held here in Canadian. For those who are not familiar with S & S the format is a team roping of five head in the morning and a 9 hole golf scramble in the afternoon with the same partner.  Spikes and Spurs was started back in 2011 by Ronny Vandever and was transformed to a benefit event in 2014. This year 26 contestants and a whole host of volunteers raised just over $10,000.00!

This year’s recipient was McKaylee Swift, 24 of Mobeetie.  She was born with Spina bifida and only a single polycystic kidney.  The kidney filled with stones resulting in removal.  She was in the hospital from January until the end of July for the removal and dialysis until it was determined adult equipment could be used for her dialysis and she was finally able to come home.  She has to have dialysis three times a week at present and they are working to get her on the transplant list.  She has always had a good outlook on life even though it has been rough and smiles continuously!

Also honored was Keller McNeely, 3 1/2 year old son of Matt McNeely (One of our S & S members).  Keller has had surgery and chemo for Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis that was diagnosed in July of 2019.  Langerhans cells are a type of white blood cell that normally help the body fight infection but in LCH, too many cells are produced and build up in certain parts of the body where they can form tumors.  In Keller’s case, the tumor showed up on the back of his head and went through a piece of the skull resulting in a gap in his skull that also had to be repaired.  Spikes and Spurs presented Keller with an Honorary Spikes and Spurs buckle.

I have always been proud to be associated with S & S , but never as much as I am in 2020! We all have felt the effects of this year and not in a good way. In the middle of an economic collapse, civil unrest, and a 100 year pandemic….people of the Panhandle can still come together to help those less fortunate. As your State Representative, I have had the honor of visiting every corner of our great state. I alway hear comments like “why would anyone live up there”? My standard reply is that we like having four seasons in a week! In all seriousness, it’s the people. I have been truly blessed to live and raise my family among the best people anywhere! Events like the Spikes and Spurs make me extremely proud of our ZIP code!

I would like to specifically thank the Canadian Rodeo Association, the Canadian Golf Course, and Darrel Narron, for providing the venues for our event! As well as a big thank you to all of the volunteers and sponsors—we couldn’t do this without you!

We have received numerous phone calls and emails regarding the opening of beauty salons, barber shops and similar cosmetic services. The owners of these extremely small businesses are fully trained in safety procedures nd are required to do training regarding sanitation and hygiene to receive their licenses.

While we realize that the operator and the client will be in very close contact, both individuals can wear protective equipment, essentially being no different than picking up an order from someone at a retail establishment or going to a dentist appointment.

We all know that Texas is not a one size fits all state. What is effective for Austin, Dallas or Houston is most likely not effective in small rural communities.  We would ask that you please reconsider the opening of beauty salons, barber shops and other cosmetic services, if not across all f Texas, at least in rural communities that have entered Phase 2 of reopening Texas.

In light of the March 13^th COVID-19 Disaster Declaration, Governor Abbott directed the  Department to waive certain expiration dates for driver licenses, identification cards and commercial driver licenses.

From the DPS website:  “In accordance with section 418.016 of the Texas Government Code, the Office of the Governor approved DPS’ request to suspend provisions of the Texas Transportation Code to the extent necessary to delay the expiration of Texas DL/CDL/ID/EIC cards. This means that if your Texas DL/CDL/ID/EIC card expires on or after March 13, 2020, it falls under the period that encompasses the State of Disaster Declaration related to COVID-19 and will remain valid for 60 days after which time DPS issues public notice that the extension period for this disaster declaration has been lifted.”

Individuals applying for an original commercial license, will still have to come into one of our designated CDL testing sites.  Please see the attached DL-95 for a map of CDL testing sites around the state.  These offices are appointment only.   For those needing to schedule a CDL test, you can schedule an appointment by sending an email to [email protected]. Please include your name, DL number, date of birth, telephone number, email address and your preferred office location in your request.

Additionally, the Department was advised on March 30^th, that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will not issue a non-compliance finding if a state does not change the medical certification status to “not certified” or downgrade a CDL/CLP holder whose Medical Examiner’s Certificate has expired during the COVID-19 emergency.

Texans can now vote on ten proposed amendments to our State Constitution. I strongly encourage you to consider all of the proposed changes and cast your ballot to make your voice heard!

Proposition 1

“The constitutional amendment permitting a person to hold more than one office as a municipal judge at the same time.”

Proposition 2

“The constitutional amendment providing for the issuance of additional general obligation bonds by the Texas Water Development Board in an amount not to exceed $200 million to provide financial assistance for the development of certain projects in economically distressed areas.”

Proposition 3

“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for a temporary exemption from ad valorem taxation of a portion of the appraised value of certain property damaged by a disaster.”

Proposition 4

“The constitutional amendment prohibiting the imposition of an individual income tax, including a tax on an individual’s share of partnership and unincorporated association income.”

Proposition 5

“The constitutional amendment dedicating the revenue received from the existing state sales and use taxes that are imposed on sporting goods to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Historical Commission to protect Texas’ natural areas, water quality, and history by acquiring, managing, and improving state and local parks and historic sites while not increasing the rate of the state sales and use taxes.”

Proposition 6

“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to increase by $3 billion the maximum bond amount authorized for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.”

Proposition 7

“The constitutional amendment allowing increased distributions to the available school fund.”

Proposition 8

“The constitutional amendment providing for the creation of the flood infrastructure fund to assist in the financing of drainage, flood mitigation, and flood control projects.”

Proposition 9

“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to exempt from ad valorem taxation precious metal held in a precious metal depository located in this state.”

Proposition 10

“The constitutional amendment to allow the transfer of a law enforcement animal to a qualified caretaker in certain circumstances.”
